While Microsoft are going all in on creating a larger Xbox ecosystem spamming multiple systems across multiple console generations, Sony are continuing to stick with the traditional console generations model. And while both obviously have their own pros and cons, as far as Sony are concerned, they see nothing but pros when it comes to new generations making it possible for developers to make the kind of games that couldn’t be made before.
Recently, speaking with GamesIndustry, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan reiterated Sony’s belief in console generations, saying that using the PS5’s more powerful hardware and its new features – such as those seen in the DualSense or the console’s 3D audio engine – Sony will make it their mission to deliver “new and different” games that can not be found anywhere but on the PS5.
“We have always said that we believe in generations,” Ryan said. “We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features.
“We do believe in generations, and whether it’s the DualSense controller, whether it’s the 3D audio, whether it’s the multiple ways that the SSD can be used… we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5.”
Those are bold words, of course, and whether or not the PS5 will deliver such games remains to be seen. That said, we’re going to get our first taste of that very soon, with Sony having officially announced a PS5 games showcase for June 4, so we might get our answers sooner than you’d think.
In related news, Ryan has said that though it might not be the cheapest console, the PS5’s price will “provide the best possible value proposition” and has also reiterated that the console will launch globally.
There’s going to be lots of PS5 news coming in thick and fast over the coming days and weeks, so stay tuned for all those updates and more.
