Resident Evil Requiem - Upgraded PSSR

After promising the same last year, Sony has announced that PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution’s upgrade is coming very soon. It will be available in the “coming weeks” for PS5 Pro owners, and represents the fruits of PlayStation’s AMD partnership through Project Amethyst (which PC players may have noticed in AMD FSR 4).

Resident Evil Requiem, out now, is the first title to support it, with Sony claiming that it helps “keep both frame rate and image quality high.” Regarding its benefits, especially with the new hair tech, Capcom’s Masaru Ijuin, Senior Manager Engine Development Support Section R&D Foundational Technology Department, explained how, ” So when you see light passing through hair or strands folding over each other, they’ll look even crisper than on a regular PS5.

As for the future, “multiple” existing titles will be upgraded to support the new PSSR via a software update. Once installed, you can select “Enhanced PSSR Image Quality” for titles that support the upscaling tech on PS5 Pro, which should ideally result in “noticeably crisper graphics.”

Stay tuned for more details on the upgraded PSSR’s rollout next month. In the meantime, Resident Evil Requiem is available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Check out our review – we scored it a 9 out of 10, praising the visuals, attention to detail, combat and dual playstyles, though the final hour somewhat stumbles compared to the rest of the game.
