Psychonauts 2’s development has certainly taken its sweet time to get to the finishing line, with the game already having been delayed on a few occasions. Its most recent delay pushed it back into 2021, but it’s now looking extremely unlikely that it will be delayed anymore.

In a year-end update talking about the game’s development, Double Fine provided updates on how the project has been progressing. Apparently, it has been progressing rather well (thanks, Microsoft money). According to studio head Tim Schafer, all the levels that the studio planned on putting into the game are now in the game, and development is now nearing completion, with Double Fine in the process of applying polish and the final balancing touches.

The developers explain in the video (which you can view below) that they have been reviewing the content in the game over Zoom calls for some time now. Meanwhile, Schafer also explains that the studio has been able to work on the game without having to resort to crunch, which is a change from how the first game’s development went (“On the first game that was one of the worst crunch modes we’ve ever done,” Schafer says in the video).

Psychonauts 2 is, then, almost certainly due out this year for the Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates.
