Resident Evil 9 Will Build on Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Open World Tech – Rumour

The game will attempt to retain the series' DNA while utilizing the RE Engine's new open world tech, it's been claimed.

With Resident Evil Village approaching its three-year anniversary, we’re approaching the point where all eyes in the Resident Evil fanbase will be turning to the series’ next new mainline instalment, and though Capcom has yet to officially announced Resident Evil 9, some details on the title have been filtering through leaks and rumours in recent months nonetheless.

Several of those rumours have come from prominent leaker Dusk Golem, who recently dropped some more potential details on the game on Twitter. Interestingly, according to the leaker, Resident Evil 9 is going to build on the RE Engine’s new open world technology that Capcom used in the recently-released Dragon’s Dogma 2.

As per the leaker, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Resident Evil 9, and Monster Hunter Wilds (which is due out in 2025) sharing their open world tech is part of Capcom’s tendency to “greenlight new initiatives in threes”, similar to Resident Evil 7, Devil May Cry 5, and Resident Evil 2’s 2019 remake being greenlit together as the first flagship RE Engine games, and how the latter’s success spawned remakes of Resident Evil 3 and 4.

Dusk Golem says that Capcom’s goal with both Resident Evil 9 and Monster Hunter Wilds is to retain the DNA of their respective franchises while also expanding on their foundations with new open world tech, similar to Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Resident Evil 9 has allegedly been in development since 2018, with a reveal likely set for some time this year, ahead of a 2025 launch. It’s been claimed that it has the largest development budget in the series’ history. It’s also allegedly one of five Resident Evil games currently in development at Capcom.
