Resident Evil Requiem Producer Says Raccoon City is “The Most Fitting Setting” for 30th Anniversary

Capcom's Masato Kumazawa also notes that the "Requiem" part of the survival horror sequel's title has "many layers" of meaning.

Resident Evil Requiem

Capcom featured Resident Evil Requiem in its recent Spotlight showcase, and while the gameplay wasn’t too extensive, it revealed extensive new details on the setting and concepts. If that weren’t enough, producer Masato Kumazawa spoke more about “requiem” and what it inferred about the story to PlayStation Blog.

“There are many layers to the title: a requiem for the protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, grappling with the loss of her mother eight years ago, and a requiem for all of the people who were caught up in the Raccoon City incident, to name but just a few examples. But once you complete the game, I believe you’ll find even more levels of meaning for the subtitle.” Combined with director Koshi Nakanishi calling the title a “eulogy” for “those who came before,” it will be interesting to see if any other notable characters return.

But why opt for returning to Raccoon City? Kumazawa states, “In recent mainline titles like Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village, the series has explored the broader world of the Resident Evil universe by focusing on incidents involving the Winters family.

“With Resident Evil Requiem, however, we wanted to return to a story that continues the overarching narrative rooted in Raccoon City and the secret machinations of the Umbrella Corporation. As the series celebrates its 30th anniversary, we believe Raccoon City is the most fitting setting.”

Considering how the city’s destruction influenced so many titles in the series for years to come, the significance of a return can’t be understated. Resident Evil Requiem launches on February 27th, 2026, for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, having recently crossed one million wishlists.

It’s playable at Gamescom in August, but Capcom hasn’t confirmed whether a free demo will also arrive before launch. Unlike previous games, Requiem offers first-person and third-person perspectives, which the player can switch at any time. Stay tuned for more updates in the meantime.
