Along with outlining how it takes advantage of the PS5’s hardware, the official PlayStation.com listing for Returnal also gives some more details on the gameplay. The story sees Selene crash-landing on a strange alien world which contains the remains of an old civilization. This is the key to escaping but every time she dies, Selene is reborn, the world changes and she must start the trek again.

With each cycle, new items and combinations are provided. Selene will locate different alien tech which can be used to upgrade abilities for future runs. She’ll also gather fragments of her memories and create a “personal collection” with the planet. The “bullet hell-fueled combat” also seems in line with Housemarque’s previous shoot ’em ups (but as a third-person shooter).

Overall, there’s a fair bit of mystery to unravel and some terrifying enemies to fight. Check out the screenshots below to see some of the foes. Returnal is reportedly out in 2021 for PS5 – stay tuned for more details en route to its release.
