At E3 2019, Nintendo had itself another awesome Direct presentation, capping off with the announcement of a sequel for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Details have been scant thus far – we know it takes place in the same Hyrule and that it will be a “darker” experience. What we don’t know is when it will release.
According to reputed leaker Sabi – who you’ll remember for leaking Bethesda’s Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo before the publisher’s E3 presser – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel is planned for a 2020 release. Of course, it’s not that simple. “I would tell you Breath of the Wild 2 is planned to release in 2020, but Zelda release dates are historically delayed, internally or publicly.” Later, Sabi added, “This isn’t speculation, just current plans.”
It’s certainly nothing new for Nintendo. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was delayed in order to launch with the Nintendo Switch, after all. If the sequel is indeed a full-fledged new game, it wouldn’t be strange to see Nintendo taking time for more polish. After all, the same thing happened with Animal Crossing: New Horizons which was slated for 2019 and is now releasing on March 20th 2020.
Regardless, we’ll have to stay tuned for more information. Even if The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel skips 2020, could we see more gameplay at next year’s E3? Fingers crossed.
