Formerly known as Lords of the Fallen 2, CI Games’ The Lords of the Fallen re-emerged at Gamescom Opening Night Live with Hexworks as the developer. Developed on Unreal Engine 5, it takes place one thousand years after the original but still appears to be a Souls-like action RPG.

In a press release, the publisher has outlined even more details about the game. It notes that the interconnected world is five times larger than the first game’s. Along with NPC quests, “compelling characters” and a “rich narrative,” players can create a character.

A new feature in the sequel is online co-op support for two players which promises to be uninterrupted. As for the development team, Hexworks consists of over 75 internal developers and a “network of external partners.” It’s led by creative director Cezar Virtosu (Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed Origins) and executive producer Saul Gascon (Dead by Daylight, PayDay 2).

Virtosu stated, “The Lords of the Fallen is the spiritual successor fans of the original title have always wanted. The game is significantly larger, with a vast, interconnected dual world split between the realms of the living and dead, that players can explore alone or with friends. It’s darker and more challenging, with faster Souls-like combat, stronger thematic, richer narrative, deeper RPG systems, and more immersive storytelling.” In addition, players can utilize “devastating magic.”

A release date hasn’t been announced, but it’s out in 2023 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Expect to see more gameplay in the coming months as the global marketing campaign kicks off this year.
