Metroid was a groundbreaking game when it first came out on the NES, wowing audiences with its focus on exploration and its blend of puzzle-solving, platforming, and combat. But a lot of the game’s design was flat-out obtuse, which may have been tolerable all the way back then, but just doesn’t cut it anymore. Secrets are often hidden in the most arbitrary ways, essentially boiling down to you bombing every single pixel on the screen in a room, while other quality of life issues – such as the lack of a map to help you keep track of all the areas you’ve explored – further make the experience seem that much more dated.
