Mass Effect
One could argue that Commander Shepard is more of a blank slate molded by player choice than an actual character but there’s no denying the incredible depth of the Mass Effect universe. The establishment of races like the Asari, Turians and Krogan, politics and all, and how humanity fits into everything, coupled with the imminent threat of the Reapers, is just as intriguing now as it was all those years ago. Include a definitive ending with more threads tied up and we’re good seeing it as a long-running series.
