Marvel’s Avengers
It’s not enough to have one major live service looter failure in recent memory. No, we just had to have two. Marvel’s Avengers was more or less fated to be a cash-grab, especially after the mega-success of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. And yet, the announcement of it being a games-as-a-service title before any real gameplay reveal was an omen of sorts. When players finally got their hands on it, Marvel’s Avengers came off as little more than a lifeless shell of a game, one that was focused more on battle passes, microtransactions and post-launch roadmaps than actually innovating in its own way. Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal continue to support it, with a new expansion for Black Panther out in August, but for how much longer remains to be seen.
