THE FINGER IN THE RESIDENT EVIL 7 DEMO
Capcom’s pre-release marketing for Resident Evil 7 was truly a wondrous thing. Most notably, they released a demo for the game that was not a snippet from the game itself, but an entirely different experience in and of itself, and connected to the main game itself in other, different ways. And it was a great demo. But more importantly, it had… the finger. Once players found a seemingly innocuous dummy finger, they went, for the lack of a better (or more apt) word, berserk. It was, based on all outward appearances, a useless object.
But it couldn’t be, right? Capcom continued to tease things, hinting that the finger was actually pretty important, and after an update to the demo and obsessive fiddling around by thousands of fans, people who managed to make use of it the way they were supposed to were rewarded with a dirty coin. No, literally, a dirty coin. Along with the message “You’re the best ever!” And what’s the purpose of this coin? It can be used as an extra antique counts to unlock upgrades in the full game. That’s great and everything, but after months of mystery and obsessive discussions, was it really worth it? Could anything have been worth it?
