Love it or hate it, there’s no denying that the PlayStation 5’s design is different. It’s a huge departure from previous consoles, embracing more curves and a sleek white aesthetic. What prompted such a paradigm shift in the design department?

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and president Jim Ryan explained to CNET that, “We wanted to do something that was bold and daring almost. We wanted something forward facing and future facing, something for the 2020s. The PS5’s design is meant to demonstrate Sony’s belief that the technology inside and the games that run on it are as eye-catching as the outside you see.”

Ryan also spoke about having the console “grace” living areas, in a way. “The PlayStation sits in the living area of most homes, and we kind of felt it would be nice to provide a design that would really grace most living areas. That’s what we’ve tried to do. And, you know, we think we’ve been successful in that.”

Sony recently unveiled the PlayStation 5’s design during its recent showcase event, which saw huge exclusives like Horizon Forbidden West and a remake of Demon’s Souls. Along with the standard console that comes with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, there’s a drive-less digital edition on offer. This was done to “offer choice” as per Ryan since “Many of our consumers are purchasing solely digitally these days.”

No price was mentioned for either version of the console so we’ll have to wait for more details the coming months. The PS5 is currently slated to release this holiday season. Launch titles include Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Astro’s Playroom, Godfall, Deathloop and more.
