Sony had its PS5 reveal showcase last week and introduced a bevy of big-time games like Horizon Forbidden West, Project Athia and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. It also unveiled the console’s design and a special digital edition for those opting to disc-less. But when will we see the user interface in action?

Matt MacLaurin, who is VP of UX design at PlayStation, says it’s coming soon and also promised an overhaul of the PS4’s UI. Responding to queries on LinkedIn, MacLaurin stated, “My team is the user interface, not the ID – you’ll see our stuff soon. A little more pragmatic, but a 100% overhaul of PS4 UI and some very different new concepts.”

The PlayStation 5’s UI is “practical first” but looks to make some big changes. MacLaurin said that he was “excited about what we’ve got to show there. As it’s UI it’s practical first, but it’s a whole new visual language and a complete rearchitecting of the user interface.”

It also seems that the interface will also run quickly. “While we are obsessed with function, very few pixels left from PS4 gen. Most important is experience goals measured in milliseconds across the entire UI,” said MacLaurin.

The PlayStation 5 is currently slated to release this holiday season. Sony has yet to reveal prices for the standard and digital editions of the console but more details are undoubtedly on the way. Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan also promised that there were many more unannounced games currently in the works. So don’t lose hope for that Silent Hill reboot yet.
