In a little over two years since its launch, the PS5 has managed to ship 32.1 million units worldwide, and with stock shortages finally coming to an end, Sony is projecting a significant boost in sales for the consoles in the coming months and years. The company will, of course, expect a great deal of existing users in the PlayStation ecosystem to make the jump from PS4 to PS5, but it seems the latter is drawing in plenty of newcomers as well.

In its recent quarterly fiscal report, Sony revealed that nearly 30% of PS5’s monthly active users did not have a PS4. “With the spread of PS5, the acquisition of new users is progression,” the company wrote. Incidentally, the number of monthly active users also increased by 30% in the month of December- which is to be expected, given the influx of new sales consoles tend to see in the final weeks of every year.

Meanwhile, Sony also says that for users who did migrate from PS4 to PS5, engagement metrics are “significantly higher” on the new console. This includes things such as users’ PS Plus subscription rate, gameplay time, and average spending amount.

Since the launch of the PS5, Sony has kept up active support for the PS4, with the vast majority of its first party exclusives launching as cross-gen titles, including the likes of God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, and Gran Turismo 7. That said, it does look like the company is starting to shift the bulk of its focus to current-gen hardware. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, for instance, will launch exclusively for PS5 this Fall, while Sony has also previously said that it will completely phase out active support for PS4 by 2025 at most.
