Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is improving and expanding upon its predecessors in a number of areas, from combat to traversal and much more, and as you’d expect from an open world sequel, it is, of course, set to be a much larger experience as well. But though its New York is going to be roughly twice as large as the map of its two predecessors, that’s not going to result in a significantly longer experience.
No, in fact, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is going to be roughly as long as the first game. That’s as per Insomniac Games’ senior game director Ryan Smith, who confirmed the same in a recent interview with VG247. That would mean a runtime between 20-25 hours, roughly speaking, depending on how much side content you’re doing.
“Spider-Man 2 is in the same ball-park as the first game in terms of overall play time,” Smith said. “And we really thought about how to make each of the moments a little more epic, or a little deeper, or a little more story-integrated.”
Smith went on to add that with the sequel, Insomniac’s goal isn’t to deliver a broader experience with more content, but to improve the quality of the content on offer, by infusing everything with as much narrative detail as possible.
“We don’t want this to be an 80-100 hour game, that’s not where we want to be,” he said. “We want to tell amazing stories, the best we can. We want to make every mission really, really memorable. That’s our goal, rather than going super, super broad.”
“We want to make sure that there’s a story element to everything that you discover in the world,” Smith added. “We saw players really respond to that when we did it well in previous titles.”
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is set to launch on October 20 for PS5. It will 30 FPS, 40 FPS, and 60 FPS modes at launch, and all three will feature ray tracing.
