Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

By splitting up Final Fantasy 7’s story across a trilogy of full-fledged games with its ongoing remake trilogy, Square Enix has been able to flesh out its world and characters much more than it would have been able to do with a more conventional remake. Where the latter are concerned, that has also included entirely new characters who weren’t part of the story in the original game itself, coming in the form of secondary members of the cast who still end up having fairly important roles to play.

And as you’d imagine, the development team is hoping to bring their stories to a close with the final instalment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. Speaking in an interview that was included in the recently published Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Material Ultimania Plus (via Frontline JP), which is the official companion book for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, scenario writer Hiroaki Iwaki said that through “side episodes”, the development team will be continuing and concluding the remake trilogy’s newly introduced characters’ stories. According to Iwaki, the trilogy’s final game will serve as a “curtain call” for these characters.

Interestingly, in an interview featured in the aforementioned book, Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy’s creative director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that work on the final instalment’s story has wrapped up, and that voice recording work is expected to begin soon. In fact, Square Enix is hoping to finish the game’s development within three years, which suggests the company is targeting a 2027 launch for the action RPG.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth game director Naoki Hamaguchi has previously said that the trilogy’s final instalment will also continue to include characters and story elements from Compilation of Final Fantasy 7 titles, and that some parts of the original game that were missing in Rebirth will likely be featured as well- such as Rocket Town. Meanwhile, Hamaguchi has also suggested that the game’s world map will be rebuilt to accommodate airship traversal.
