It’s still difficult to wrap your head around how Square Enix managed to make a game as massive and diverse as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in the short amount of time that it did, and it looks like the company is hoping to do the same with the remake trilogy’s final instalment.

Square Enix recently released the book Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Material Ultimania Plus, a companion book for the recently released action RPG that, among other things, goes into detail about its development while shedding light on what lies ahead for the trilogy.

In fact, as per an excerpt that was translated and shared by Twitter user @aitaikimochi, work on the next instalment’s story has already been completed, and creative director Tetsuya Nomura believes voice recording for the game will begin “in the near future.”

Producer Yoshinori Kitase is also hoping to wrap up development as quickly as three years- which, incidentally, was how long it took to developer Rebirth as well, with the development team having been focused on the first game’s DLC, Episode INTERmission, until 2021. As per Kitase, with the final instalment once again being developed by the same development (just as Rebirth was), the development cycle will likely once again be a contracted one.

Interestingly, Nomura has also said he’s working on incorporating something story-related that was suggested to him by Kitase that wasn’t in the original Final Fantasy 7’s story, which he believes will “surely make people happy” if done correctly.

As far back as 2022, it was confirmed that development on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy’s final instalment was already underway. Earlier this year, it was said that further progress had been made on its script.

After the launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, game director Naoki Hamaguchi suggested that the next instalment would feature content from the original game that wasn’t included in Rebirth, such as Rocket Town, as well as further integration of elements from Compilation of Final Fantasy 7 entries. Hamaguchi has also said that the next game would likely also feature a rebuilt world in order to accommodate airship traversal.
