While Sony’s decision to drop its publishing deal for Physint may have hinted at some animosity between the company and Hideo Kojima, the latter seems to be working with Sony on something new. Kojima has taken to social media to post a picture of himself leaning stylishly against a table with a large, well-lit Sony logo in the background.
Kojima hasn’t really posted any text alongside the picture, adding further mystery about why he would be at what appears to be one of Sony’s offices. This post seems to be a follow-up to another pair of photos he had posted earlier this week of him posing at Sony City, with Sony’s logo prominently displayed above him.
The Metal Gear creator has worked quite prominently with Sony in the past across a variety of projects, ranging from the espionage franchise to, more recently, Death Stranding. In the past, his projects have also served to highlight the capabilities of some of Sony’s hardware, with Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty representing a major technological leap when compared to Metal Gear Solid. Similarly, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was also a showcase title for the PS3, being available exclusively on the console until earlier this year thanks to the release of Master Collection Vol. 2.
Until recently, Kojima was also working with Sony to release Physint until the company confirmed that it was dropping its publishing deal. After a short period of uncertainty, Kojima ultimately signed a deal with Xbox to publish the espionage title.
“In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in Xbox a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again,” announced Kojima Productions.
With the studio already working with Xbox on upcoming horror title OD, Kojima said: “In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in Xbox a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again.”
Following this event, Kojima has even expressed doubt about whether Physint will get a PlayStation release following the studio signing its deal with Xbox. Despite this, however, he has praised the company for its technical expertise.
“After we decided to team up with Xbox, they said they will give us a lot of technological support. When I went to visit them during the Don Mattrick days, they had so many labs and everything, and they were experimenting on so many things, like state-of-the-art, new, really new, cutting-edge technology. I was really surprised. I was thinking, ‘There are so many Doc Browns from Back to the Future here!’ So, I want to use all this new technology. Anything that I can use, I want to use, and I’m looking forward to teaming up with Xbox, but I really haven’t decided about the engine.”
Kojima Productions doesn’t have any announced games in the works aside from Physint and OD.
