Much has been said about PlayStation’s live-service initiative, but even with so many failures, it’s still trying, even as efforts like Marathon and the upcoming Horizon Hunters Gathering have been underwhelming. However, there’s one successful title that isn’t live-service and receives content monthly: Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 7.
Over four years later, the racing sim is gearing up for its biggest content drop yet: Spec IV. Interestingly, however, series producer Kazunori Yamauchi admits that the team didn’t expect this kind of success. Speaking to Traxion.gg, he said, “Gran Turismo 7 is still continuing to sell very well, but we had not expected this from the beginning. We continue to provide additional content and game modes because there is this user base that is still continuing to grow.”
The game’s initial success shouldn’t be surprising. The series topped 100 million sales last year, but its continued growth, aided by regular updates, is all the more impressive. Spec IV is arguably the biggest free addition, with Part 1 launching on October 14th and adding six new cars, the SUGO Circuit, and many other features, including Used and Legend car purchasing through the Car Concierge.
Part 2 launches in December, adding six more cars, Family mode, Shuffle Race, Online Drift Trial, and the Autumn Ring circuit. A release date has yet to be announced, so stay tuned for more details and updates. Regarding the future, there are no signs that Polyphony Digital is stopping support anytime soon. Unless, of course, a new Gran Turismo is on the horizon.
