Reports that Take-Two Interactive is focusing on the single-player component with Grand Theft Auto 6 appear legitimate, as Rockstar North confirms there won’t be any microtransactions. Kinda Funny Games’ Andy Cortez asked co-studio head Rob Nelson if players can use real-world money to buy anything in-game and was told up front, “No monetization.”
Greg Miller also asked whether generative AI was used for development and received a similar response. “No AI.” When asking about GTA Online, Rockstar simply wouldn’t budge on providing any details. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously called the idea of AI making games like this “laughable,” and reaffirmed that everything about Grand Theft Auto 6 was created from the ground up by real humans.
Of course, just because it lacks microtransactions doesn’t mean Rockstar isn’t making a pretty penny in other ways. The Ultimate Edition, for example, includes several goodies and exclusive access to five stores, including a tattoo parlor, salon and clothing, for $100. Lo and behold, it’s the more popular option in terms of pre-orders.
This also doesn’t necessarily mean that the next iteration of Grand Theft Auto Online will follow the same trend. Rockstar hasn’t discussed multiplayer in any shape or form, but GTA 5’s iteration of the component brings over $1 million daily from microtransactions.
Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19th for Xbox Series X/S and PS5. Previews thus far have confirmed that its world is three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2’s playable space, among many other things.
