Grand Theft Auto 6’s Map is Triple the Size of Red Dead Redemption 2

Vice City and Leonida completely dwarf Rockstar's 2018 title in terms of playable area and should offer far more complexity.

Remember Crimson Desert and how Pearl Abyss said that it was larger than Red Dead Redemption 2? You would think Grand Theft Auto 6 is larger, and Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson recently attested to its sheer complexity. But in a new interview with The New York Times, the developer revealed it’s three times the size of its 2018 open-world title.

“The overall map, the studio said, is three times as large as the playable area of its previous game, Red Dead Redemption 2,” notes the article. Of course, there are levels to this. How much of that comprises the underwater sections? After all, Vice City has its share of ports and harbors, and players can scuba dive to explore reefs and whatnot. Surely there’s a lot more to discover than Grand Theft Auto 5’s lackluster ocean.

There’s also the wilderness of Leonida, and how extensive civilization is outside of Vice City. It’s unlikely the surrounding environments are flat and lifeless, whether you’re hunting, observing animals or climbing Mount Kalaga. Then again, you could say the same for the sprawling metropolis, especially with what appears to be a wide range of buildings to enter and NPCs of all shapes and sizes to interact with.

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19th for Xbox Series X/S and PS5, and thus far, its feature list is impressive. Head here to learn more about how stealing vehicles has become more challenging, or here for details on the new Criminal Profiles system.
