Now that Halo Studios is done with Halo: Campaign Evolved, a new report by Rebs Gaming gives us some hints about the future of the studio. Among other things, the studio is now seemingly working on a new multiplayer project, as well as a remake of Halo 2 using similar technology as Halo: Campaign Evolved.

While the YouTuber isn’t a hundred percent sure about the multiplayer project, when it comes to a new remake, he pointed to a LinkedIn post by the studio’s technical art director, Yibo Liu, who celebrated the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved and wrote, “I sincerely hope this game leads to even more great things in the future.”

When it comes to the multiplayer project, it is expected to take its cues from the classic arena shooter gameplay style of the Halo franchise. According to Rebs Gaming, creative director John Williams was at one point leading a team to prototype a new multiplayer Halo project. The game seemingly made use of Halo: Campaign Evolved’s engine, which will also be used in the rumored new multiplayer game.

As for when we might expect these projects to come to fruition, the next new mainline campaign-centric game is seemingly still in its concept stages. This is due to the fact that many of the projects at Halo Studios were paused so that the entirety of the development team could focus on wrapping up work on Halo: Campaign Evolved. Whether Halo 2’s remake will see the light of day or not, however, remains to be seen.

Interestingly, the secret ending for Halo: Campaign Evolved already started laying the narrative groundwork for a potential remake of Halo 2. Players who were able to clear the game on its Legendary difficulty mode discovered an alternate ending cutscene featuring Sergeant Johnson saying “see you in the sequel”. While it might just be a tongue-in-cheek joke, Halo Studios likely wanted the cutscene to be discovered so that fan support could lead to a remake of Halo 2 being developed.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is officially coming out on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S later today. Over the weekend, however, players have been able to experience the title thanks to advanced access provided by its premium edition. Celebrating the advanced access launch, Microsoft and Halo Studios released a trailer.

A remake of 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo: Campaign Evolved takes players through the story of the first adventure that was developed for series protagonist Master Chief. After facing an assault by the Covenant, Master Chief, aboard the UNSC warship Pillar of Autumn, is forced to crash-land onto a mysterious ring-shaped structure floating around in space – the eponymous Halo. Along with fighting the Covenant, Master Chief also starts slowly discovering the structure’s true purpose, and together with his AI companion Cortana, must figure out how to ensure that it doesn’t get used.

The original release was a big hit for Xbox, being one of its must-play games and generally setting up the foundation on which FPS games made for consoles would further build on over the years.
