The studio behind Marvel Rivals has been seemingly working on a PvE mode, complete with a full boss fight, if recent leaks are to be believed.

While Marvel Rivals is getting quite a bit of a reputation as a competent competitive multiplayer hero shooter, the game might soon be dipping its toe into the PvE side of things. Recent leaks indicate that a PvE mode is in the works, with assets discovered by leakers showcasing what might be a new boss fight coming to the game.

Following up from reports of a PvE mode in Marvel Rivals from X user RivalsLeaks, a more recent leak shows off what seems to be an early iteration of a kraken-esque tentacled monster chasing the player around in one of the game’s maps. It is worth noting that, if this is a real leak, these assets are still quite early seeing as how they don’t have animations and are simply following the player around with tentacles outstretched.

While it may not have been fully rigged and animated yet, this kraken certainly looks close to completion on the modelling and texturing side of things. The video also gives us a short look at its maw, which even has fully-textured teeth.

The addition of a PvE mode would also be a big way for Marvel Rivals to distinguish itself from competing game Overwatch 2, which had to scrap its planned PvE mode before bringing it back in a lackluster fashion.

When it comes to adding new content to Marvel Rivals, developer NetEase Games has been on quite a roll. The studio recently announced that it would be bringing the remaining members of the Fantastic Four to its roster on February 21. This means that players will finally get to take on the roles of The Thing and Human Torch, joining Sue Storm and Reid Richards that have already been in the game for some time.

The studio has previously stated its intent to focus on keeping the game more fun, even at the cost of competitive balance. Creative director Guangyun Chen spoke about this in an interview last month, reiterating that the studio wants Marvel Rivals to be the type of game that appeals to every kind of player.

While Chen says that a competitive scene popping up around Marvel Rivals would be a great thing, the studio also wants to make sure that more casual players are also having fun. This means that the game’s balance won’t be focused on tournament results or quick play, but rather, a broader look at the game will be taken when it comes to considering game balance.

In keeping with this philosophy, Chen also spoke about not wanting to bring Role Lock or Role Queues to Marvel Rivals. The studio instead prefers that players would come up with their own team compositions rather than sticking to a rigidly-defined meta. Chen also points to the Team-Up mechanic to further help players figure out their compositions.

Marvel Rivals is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The game was a huge success quickly after release, crossing more than 20 million players quite quickly. It has also managed to attract more than 644,000 concurrent players on Steam alone. For more details, check out our review.
