After detailing base PS5 features several weeks ago, Housemarque finally revealed details on how Saros utilizes the PS5 Pro. As you probably expect, it’s the latest to support the new Upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. It offers an “even sharper image,” per creative director Gregory Louden, and “you can barely tell it apart from native 4K as you explore Carcosa.”
Of course, that’s not all. On the PlayStation Blog, Seppo Halonen stated that the base rendering resolution is higher on PS5 Pro.
“On PlayStation 5 Pro, we also increased our base render resolution, which is the resolution before upscaling. This means on PS5 Pro, you will have an even clearer, higher resolution image at 60 fps. While we use dynamic resolution to ensure a stable frame rate even in the middle of hectic combat, PS5 Pro always delivers a sharper image in a scene-to-scene comparison.”
Based on gameplay thus far, the frame rate definitely stays fairly consistent throughout. Halonen also notes that there are “many small adjustments in reflections and overall quality, ensuring that the increase is not only more pixels, but also the content we render scales up to match.”
However, “key” story cinematics are in 30 frames per second with the team focusing more on “high quality characters, lighting and postprocessing at peak resolution.” And once again, you can expect the PS Pro to deliver even better quality than the base console.
Saros launches on April 30th for PS5 (April 28th for those who purchase the Digital Deluxe version). It tells the story of Arjun Devraj, stranded on Carcosa and stuck in an endless cycle of death and rebirth due to a mysterious eclipse.
Check out our feature for everything you need to know in terms of the story, setting and features. Unlike Returnal, it’s reportedly not coming to PC, as Sony allegedly pulls its first-party single-player games from the platform. The publisher is yet to officially announce this, though, so stay tuned for further updates (and as usual, never say never).
