The Game Awards 2022 Will be “Significantly Shorter” Than Past Years

The last few years have seen The Game Awards getting progressively bigger year-on-year, with each new event being more packed than ever with new showings, updates, announcements, and more. Of course, a byproduct of that has been that the shows have become increasingly longer with each year, which is something that has been on the receiving end of some criticism.

This year’s show, however, is taking that criticism into account. Speaking recently on a Twitter spaces stream, The Game Awards producer and host Geoff Keighley revealed that this year’s show, scheduled for December 8, will be “significantly shorter” than past years’ events, and that there will be “fewer bigger games” taking the stage.

“One thing we’re doing this year is we’re trying to make the show a little bit shorter,” he said (transcribed by VGC). “I won’t say anything officially until we’re through our rehearsals, but we think it’s going to be a significantly shorter show this year.

“We think there’s been a little bit of fatigue about how long the show has been, there are lots of games and lots of things that want to be a part of it, but we’re cutting back on those things to hopefully have a bit more of a streamlined show.”

“We definitely have cut back pretty significantly in terms of the runtime on the show and just, you know, kind of fewer games, fewer bigger games that’ll be in there,” he added.

Recently, Keighley confirmed that 30-40 games will be “showing new content” at The Game Awards in a few days’ time, “a fair number” of which will be new game announcements. Read more on that through here.

Tekken 8 has been confirmed to be making an appearance at this year’s show, while 505 Games will also be announcing a new title. With Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida also being confirmed as a presenter, a new trailer is also expected for the PS5 RPG.

Meanwhile, the likes of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Diablo 4a new Crash Bandicoot gameand Kojima Productions’ next game are also rumoured to be part of the lineup for the event.
