The Outer Worlds 2 is “Looking Incredible,” Says Obsidian CEO

Feargus Urquhart says he's "impressed with the team", which has a "lot of people that get it and have worked on the first one."

Microsoft has slowly but surely provided updates on projects announced years ago, including Fable, State of Decay 3, and Perfect Dark. However, there are still outliers, including The Outer Worlds 2, announced in 2021. While Obsidian Entertainment focuses on Avowed, CEO Feargus Urquhart recently revealed that development on the sequel is “going really well.”

In a recent video interview with Limit Break Network, Urquhart said, “I’m impressed with the team…We were very lucky. We have a lot of people on that game that get it, who have worked on the first one and worked for us a very long time. So I’ve actually been really impressed by it.”

Urquhart also noted that the developer had a “really hard time” during the COVID-19 pandemic, which followed its acquisition by Microsoft. “We were trying to get The Outer Worlds done, and we’re trying to get the DLC done, and we’re trying to move Avowed forward. We want to get The Outer Worlds 2 moving, Grounded’s moving, and Josh [Sawyer] is on Pentiment

“There’s just all this stuff happening, and to be honest, we were kind of a crappy developer for about a year, year and a half. There was talk of, ‘Do we stop work on The Outer Worlds 2 and just throw the whole team on Avowed?’ Grounded wasn’t Early Access yet during some of these conversations.

“I appreciate Microsoft and the teams and everybody and that we kind of, you know, we said, ‘No, we will get there. We will get there with all these games. Are they going to be on the timelines that we originally thought? No, but we’re going to get there.” He noted how Grounded and Pentiment turned out well, Avowed is “looking great” and The Outer Worlds 2 is “looking incredible.”

The Outer Worlds 2 has been announced Xbox Series X/S and PC, though it doesn’t have a release date (and its PlayStation launch is seemingly undecided). It’s reportedly been in development since 2019, with Fallout co-creator Tim Cain announced as a consultant earlier this year.

In the meantime, Avowed will be launching on February 18th, 2025, for Xbox Series X/S and PC after facing a short delay. It’s also confirmed to appear at Gamescom later this month.
