15. Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 2 marked BioWare’s veering of the franchise into third-person shooter territory, and while it was all the better for it, the sequel offered so much more to make it stand out among the greatest RPGs. The companions were beyond likeable, replete with memorable questlines and circumstances that made you care for them. The mission design, especially the finale, is top-tier and only reinforces the bonds formed with your crew. The action is fast-paced but still affords plenty of room for strategizing. BioWare may never approach this level of quality ever again but the fact that we got it at all is worth celebrating.
