4. Half-Life 2
If Valve Software has proved anything with its games, it’s that being better or offering more simply isn’t enough. Half-Life 2 didn’t just continue the original’s story as much as expand on the mythos, presenting a brand new setting rich with characters, factions, and details. Along with excellent shooting, the Gravity Gun is perhaps the most innovative video game weapon of its era, meshing well with the game’s physics-based nature. However, more than anything, the developer’s ability to create a campaign full of incredible level design with each area having its own fun hooks and moments remains a joy to behold.
