3. God of War (2018)
You’d heard all the quotes about change being scary but almost everyone could agree that Kratos needed it after God of War 3. The 2018 title was a sequel, sure, but it also served as a soft reboot. The angry Spartan was now more mature and focused. The setting shifted to Midgard with Norse mythology and Kratos also had a companion, his son Atreus, to accompany him. All of that alone would have been enough but God of War overhauled everything that the series was known for – the combat, exploration, world design, presentation, you name it. The result is an entirely different class of action-adventure, one that evolves Kratos’ character while charting a new path forward.
