BLOODBORNE’S MYSTERIOUS CLOSED DOOR
Bloodborne is a game about a a gothic world trapped in the aftermath of a vicious and deadly disease that drives its victims to insanity and turns them into nightmarish things. It’s a game with incredibly deep lore that you can read about for countless hours on end and absolutely get lost it. It’s a game with some truly intricate level design, complex and layered gameplay mechanics, and boss fights that need to be analyzed with extreme scrutiny in order to be able to beat them successfully.
It does not surprise me, though, that Bloodborne players looked at all that stuff, went “nah”, then looked at a door that wouldn’t open, and lost their minds, as if the very disease that gave birth to the game’s Lovecraftian horror had taken root inside of them as well. A door that simply said “closed” and just would not open. What was this door? What was its purpose? Where did it lead? Did it hide some treasures, some legendary gear, some hidden boss? No. It hid nothing. It led nowhere. It was, in essence, a wall shaped like a door. Knowing Miyazaki and his tendency to troll fans (remember the useless pendant in Dark Souls?), it was just put there to elicit nutty reactions from fans. Well, mission accomplished.
