Pillars of Eternity Dev’s Next Big RPG Won’t Have Microtransactions

Obsidian Entertainment praises new Take-Two division for being "incredibly supportive" of vision.

News broke last week about Obsidian Entertainment, known for classics like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity, tying up with Take-Two indie publishing label Private Division for its next big RPG. Of course, given Take-Two’s strong push for microtransactions over the past few years (especially in NBA 2K), this caused concern for many fans.

However, Obsidian clarified right out of the gate on its official forums that there will be no microtransactions in its game. And that includes loot boxes. “The answer is simply: ‘no.’ No microtransactions, of any kind, in our game.”

Obsidian also told IGN that Take-Two has been a very good partner thus far and hasn’t pushed the company to include anything that won’t fit its vision. “Far from ‘pushing’ us to put anything – microtransactions or otherwise – into our game, Private Division has been incredibly supportive of our vision, our creative freedom, and the process by which we work to make RPGs.

“They have been fantastic partners, and we are extremely excited to work with them through release, to put what we know is going to be an amazing game into as many hands as possible.”

Thus far, Obsidian Entertainment has hinted that its next big game would be even bigger than Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, a crowd-funded project that accrued over $4.4 million in funding. Pillars of Eternity 2 is also in development and will launch in 2018 for PC, Linux and Mac OS.
