Reports from last week indicated that Sony’s PlayStation 4 had crossed the 90 million units sold mark. Today, Sony officially confirmed that its console has sold 91.6 million units worldwide, as of December 31st 2018. Insomniac’s Spider-Man continues to be a massive success as well, launching in September 2018 and selling nine million copies worldwide, as of November 25th 2018.

The PS4 managed to sell through over 5.6 million units globally in the 2018 holiday season, Sony also revealed. In terms of software sales, over 50.7 million PS4 games were sold worldwide in the holiday season. This brings the cumulative total of PS4 games sold through to 876 million worldwide, as of December 31st 2018.

Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO John Kodera offered some words on the console’s success, stating, “Thanks to the continued support from our fans during the holiday season, we are pleased to announce that PS4 has reached 91.6 million units globally. We are also happy to announce that the monthly active users of PlayStation Network continues to show strong growth, and has surpassed 90 million as of end of November 2018.”

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones,” he continued. “This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4. As we look toward the next PS4 milestone, SIE will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive entertainment experiences to the world.”

Though Sony won’t be hosting a presentation at E3 this year, rumours are rife of a PlayStation 5 announcement at some point. Whenever the plunge into next-gen is taken, the PS4 still has some high-profile releases, like Days Gone, The Last of Us: Part 2, Death Stranding, and Ghost of Tsushima to look forward to.
