DOOM Devs Have “Bantered” With Nintendo About Putting the Doom Slayer in Smash Bros.

Come on, make it happen.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a game where nothing is impossible (or very little is), and so, speculation about which characters might get added to its roster are always running rampant. One character whose name is brought up quite often is the Doom Slayer (or Doomguy, or whatever you want to call him), not only because of his presence on Nintendo systems, but also the renewed friendship between Bethesda and Nintendo.

With six more DLC fighters scheduled for the game this year, is it possible that the Slayer could join the fight as well? Well, as it turns out, Nintendo and id Software have at least been “bantering” about it, though there’s nothing official on whether it will actually happen.

When asked about that possibility in an interview with MetroDOOM (and the upcoming Eternal’s) director Marty Stratton said, “I don’t know. We’ve asked them,” before adding- “I dunno. You would honestly have to ask them. We’ve never been approached and said, ‘Hey can Doomguy be in Smash Bros.?’ But we’re open-minded if they wanna ask. But we hear it all the time [from fans]. Who would say no?”

That’s not all Stratton had to say on the topic, though. He added that the two companies have “bantered” about putting Doomguy in Smash, but that it’s “never gone anywhere serious.”

“I don’t even know who talked to who, but we’ve bantered with them,” said Stratton. “We have a great relationship with them through bringing DOOM 2016 to Switch and that kind of stuff. So we have great people over there but it’s one of those things where it’s like, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool?’ But it’s never gone anywhere serious, so we’ll see.”

Well, here’s hoping that banter does turn into something serious eventually. Meanwhile, recent rumours have indicated that the next character to be added to Smash Ultimate will be Crash Bandicoot. Read more on that through here.

DOOM Eternal is due out for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on March 20. It is in development for the Switch as well, and though the Switch version doesn’t have a release date yet, id Software says we won’t have to wait too long for it.
