Nearly two years after its disastrous launch, CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 has achieved a new sales milestone. According to the official Twitter, it’s sold over 20 million units. Its last major milestone was April 14th, 2022, at over 18 million sales.
Several things contributed to the uptick in sales numbers, starting with the release of patch 1.5 and the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions. Both helped to bolster sales, as per CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński last May. Then came patch 1.6, which added new content and quality-of-life features, and Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Studio Trigger’s anime adaptation of the universe.
The latter is responsible for the most recent surge in popularity, as Cyberpunk 2077 beat The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s all-time concurrent player peak on Steam. Last week saw one million players playing the game every day.
More is coming next year with the first (and last) paid expansion, Phantom Liberty. It adds a new area and storyline along with the return of Keanu Reeves and Johnny Silverhand. CD Projekt RED is also working on updates to the police and melee combat systems, though these will be exclusive to current-gen players.
Over 20 million cyberpunks have been roaming the streets of Night City – partying with Jackie and getting to know Johnny, driving around with Panam and diving with Judy, hanging out with River and listening to Kerry’s songs.
