Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Says Dev Team Will “Do Something Even Greater” After Remake Trilogy Wraps Up

"Whatever it is, I'm incredibly excited to work on that and see what we can do with that knowledge we've built up," says Naoki Hamaguchi.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy’s development team already proved with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth earlier this year what benefits you can get from consistency and stability for a development team over a prolonged period of time spanning multiple projects. What the dev team will accomplish with the trilogy’s conclusion will be exciting to see- but what about what lies beyond that? According to director Naoki Hamaguchi, whatever it is will be even bigger and better.

Speaking with GamesRadar, Hamaguchi said that work is still very much ongoing on Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, before adding that though he doesn’t yet know what the development team’s next project will be after that, he’s excited to work on it with their collective and combined knowledge accrued over three projects.

“We’re still working on the third game – that’s not finished yet. We still have to get that out the door,” he said. “When we get to the end of the trilogy, in terms of what the next project that the team works on, I really don’t know yet at all. It could be the next numbered Final Fantasy. It could be a completely different brand. We might start up a completely new brand, but whatever it is, I’m incredibly excited to work on that and see what we can do with that knowledge we’ve built up.”

Hamaguchi added that with the experience and know-how that the team will have amassed, whatever it moves on to after the Remake trilogy has been wrapped up will be even bigger and better.

“My team has been together – the Final Fantasy 7 team – for about a total of 10 years, maybe,” he said. “To go through this whole trilogy project, slowly building up our experience and our know-how, the team has seriously learned so much and grown so much during that period. So I think when we finally do bring the trilogy to a close and get the final game out, we’ll be in a really great position to move forward and do something even greater – and that experience is just so key to that, and that we managed to build [that] up by staying together.”

For now, Hamaguchi has reiterated that the development team isn’t working on DLC for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, with full focus now having shifted to the development of the Remake trilogy’s final instalment. Earlier this year, producer Yoshinori Kitase stated that Square Enix was targeting a 2027 release for the game.
