Playground Games has revealed more details about Fable through a gameplay demo during Xbox’s Gamescom livestream. Showing off an early part of the game, the video also gives us a look at how the open-world RPG will play, and various other aspects like villager interactions and personality traits.
Focusing on the city of Bowerstone, the gameplay demo also gives us a look at just how well-detailed the environments of Fable will be. We also get to meet the player’s husband and daughter hanging around inside their house. Tying into the personality trait system of the RPG, Bowerstone has also been characterized as being “Virtuous, Idiot, Honest, and Flirty”.
The gameplay demo takes place shortly after the inciting incident at the start of the game that sets the hero off on their grand journey. After their hometown gets turned into stone, they now have to figure out how they can get into the Hero’s Guild, where Humphry the Golden is hanging out. The Hero hopes to convince Humphry to help rescue their town. In the process of trying to get Humphry’s attention, we also get to see one of the many choices that will define a player’s time with Fable: whether to give Humphry a beer or whether to throw the beverage over him.
We also get a look at Fable’s unique method of telling the stories of its characters, which uses frequent cutaways where the characters talk about their circumstances directly to the camera in a talking head segment. Through this, Humphry reveals that he lost the Hero’s Guild in a bet. Following this, we get to see the hard-hitting combat system of the upcoming RPG.
The studio describes it as “style-weaving combat”, where players can seamlessly switch between melee attacks, ranged weapons, and magic spells without having to go into a menu to change anything. This is similar in style to the combat systems we first saw being solidified with Fable 2. The demo also gives a quick glimpse at Fable’s skill tree, which will give players brand-new abilities depending on which aspect of their Hero they want to level up.
The quest to get back the deed to the Hero’s Guild culminates in a large battle against a gang after the hero manages to sneak in and steal the deed back. After winning this combat encounter, the gameplay demonstration comes to an end.
Fable is being developed for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, and is slated for release on February 23rd, 2027.
