It’s no secret that Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar’s next open-world title, is absolutely massive in size and scope. Even if you don’t believe reports that its budget is crossing $2 billion, Take-Two Interactive’s CEO Strauss Zelnick says making games like it is “high stakes” and for “big boys only.”
Nevertheless, Dazed exclusively reports that the development team has more than doubled since the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2, which is downright shocking. Of course, they’re not all working on the same thing – a branch in Los Angeles is focused entirely on the game’s pedestrians.
And they’re also not all developers. Rockstar brought on over 50 street artists for Stockyard’s murals, lending it the feel of its real-world Miami inspiration, Wynwood. Those concerned about vehicle handling should also take note, as real race-car drivers are involved with the team in charge.
While Red Dead Redemption 2 is reported to have had 1,600 developers involved, the full credits apparently add up to about 3,024. Whether Grand Theft Auto 6 is double the former or the latter, there’s no denying the sheer effort to bring it to life. Which makes it all the more disappointing to see footage leak before its Extended Look on August 27th.
Regardless, Grand Theft Auto 6 is still on track to launch on November 19th for Xbox Series X/S and PS5.
