Just a few hours away from the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase today, it’s unknown whether Obsidian Entertainment’s RPG Avowed will appear. Insider Tom Henderson wasn’t sure (somewhat hinting at its absence but not outright confirming) but LinkedIn post from a Microsoft employee seemingly confirmed its appearance. However, there’s a further twist in the tale.
Replying to a user who hoped it would appear, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier said on Twitter, “Avowed has gone through some reboots and changed directors pretty recently. Dunno if it’ll be there today, but I wouldn’t expect to play it for a while.” Schreier then deleted the tweet (though a screencap can be seen below) and provided some more context on ResetEra. “Just to reiterate: ‘I have no idea whether the game will be shown off today, but it went through a major leadership change last year and has been rebooted multiple times.'”
He also spoke about conflicting information on whether it would appear or not from various insiders. “Remember how all the other ‘Xbox insiders’ were confident that Starfield was coming out in late 2021? When you get your information from people who work on the PR, marketing, or publishing side at Microsoft, it’s going through different filters than when you get your information from people who are directly working on the game.”
As for whether any reboots have happened since last year, Schreier said, “I don’t know if any reboots have happened since then, but yeah there was a big reboot at the end of 2020/beginning of 2021 when a bunch of the directors moved/were replaced.”
So while Avowed may or may not receive a new trailer or news today, it may end up quite different. Rumors also pegged it as releasing in Q1/Q2 2023 so it could be pushed further out. Time will tell so stay tuned for more details.
Avowed is currently in development for Xbox Series X/S and PC. Along with The Outer Worlds 2 (which hasn’t been rumored to appear), Obsidian is also reportedly working on Pentiment. Going by recent teases, the investigative RPG could be officially announced at the show.
