The Initiative, which is working on the next Perfect Dark for Xbox, has announced on Twitter that it’s partnering with Crystal Dynamics of Tomb Raider fame for development. It noted that, “The teams couldn’t pass up a chance to work together” and though the title is still early in development, both are “incredibly excited to use this unique opportunity to deliver on the vision for Perfect Dark!”
Crystal Dynamics is perhaps best known currently for developing Marvel’s Avengers. Given the studio’s pedigree in third person action-adventure games, this may be somewhat unexpected. However, The Initiative’s founder Darrell Gallagher actually worked at Crystal Dynamics and even became studio head. He was involved with projects like Tomb Raider Legend, Tomb Raider Underworld and the 2013 reboot. It’s unclear how heavily Crystal Dynamics is involved with Perfect Dark though.
As such, it will be a while before the game releases, much less receives a proper gameplay reveal. Rumors have indicated that along with Fable and Avowed, it won’t release until 2023 so there’s a ways to go. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months regardless.
