Raiden – Metal Gear Solid 4

Raiden grew up as child soldier in the first Liberian Civil War. When Metal Gear Solid 2 begins, he’s dating Rose, who genuinely loves him despite his troubled past, and is sent on a high profile mission to track down terrorists led by “Solid Snake”. Though the mission twists everything that Raiden knows and believes, he eventually helps the real Solid Snake take down Solidus Snake. Happy ending, right? Unfortunately, Raiden’s past drove him to drink, fight with Rose and eventually leave her while believing she suffered a miscarriage. From there, Raiden traveled the globe, eventually running afoul of the Patriots’ Lost Paradise army and becoming cybernetically enhanced. This leads to his appearance in Metal Gear Solid 4, slicing and dicing GEKKOs without abandon as a cyborg warrior. He also has no qualms about stabbing himself to kill Vamp, much less destroying his body to save Snake. Fortunately, Raiden gets a happy ending as he’s reunited with Rose and finds out his son John is alive after all.
