Returnal’s ending is interesting, to say the least – it seemingly provides more context to Selene’s flashbacks (particularly the accident on the bridge). This, in conjunction with the lore notes, eventually reveals that she’s somewhat responsible for not only her mother Theia being in a wheelchair but also the death of her son, Helios. It’s not completely clear what’s going on throughout the game – is this a nightmarish world that Selene is imagining? Is she existing across several different dimensions, discovering the answers that brought her to Atropos while simultaneously setting them up in paradoxical fashion? That mystery is arguably what makes the experience so compelling.
